Ten Dollars

03Aug08

After a late night of carousing a couple of my friends and I stopped at the diner inside the White Cross Pharmacy on Las Vegas Blvd. at 4am to get a bite to eat. We sat at the counter, ordered some food and chatted with Louie the long time short-order cook of Tiffany’s Diner. A moment later we noticed a young guy behind us trying to climb the shelf partition that separated the diner from the store. He climbed clumsily up a booth and then tried to step up onto the top shelf. It became apparent to us that he was either extremely drunk or high on something. His right foot searched for some kind of purchase, but found none. After teetering for a few seconds he finally lost his balance and fell over backwards onto the table sending a pitcher of water and a small bowl of creamers flying. Laying backwards on the table stunned he reached for something to arrest his fall. The table began to lean over as his body shifted closer to the edge. At that point I decided to help the poor guy out. I stepped over and kept the table from falling over. Back on his feet, he fixed his hair and straightened himself out in a daze. I told him that there was an easier way to get into the store around the front. He mentioned nonsensically that that was where he came from. I sat back down. He began to fumble in his pocket for something. I thought to myself, “Great, now he’s going to pull out a knife and stab me with it.” Instead, he pulled out his wallet. “Where’re you guys from?” he asked. “Here,” I replied hoping he would just go away. Drunkenly he reached into his wallet, pulled out ten dollars and handed it to me. “What?” I said, “Take your money back.” He just waved it off and stumbled out the door.

Action figures_9 & Run Away with Cirque du Soleil & San Diego

On a sunny cool Saturday, March 29th, 2008  morning I, with a few friends participated in the Run Away with Cirque du Soleil 5k race at the Springs Preserve here in Las Vegas.

On hand were performers in costume from the various Cirque Du Soleil productions here in town. I’ve never been to one of their shows, so I only recognized a couple of them. These samurai-esque characters are from the faux-oriental style production called Ka.

Here are a bunch of strange Russian-style hippie people with a “British” bird, probably from the Beatles themed show Love.

This contorting zebra spandexed lady was extremely entertaining. Everytime I approached one of the tattooed Ka fellas they’d crouch down into some kind of sneaky ninja pose.

This performer was prancing around happily during most of the event. I guess he was having a moment.

The 5k (3.2 mile) course wound around the edges of the preserve. I finished 327th out of a total of 583 runners. 29th out of a total of 35 runners in my male 30–34 age class. I ran an average 10:04 per mile pace finishing in 31:16. My friends finished soon after. Then for lunch, I had a delicious BBQ Salmon “BLT” with smoked bacon, romaine hearts, tomatoes, avocado and herb mayonnaise on the patio of the Wolfgang Puck Café they have on-site.

Took a trip down to San Diego and Los Angeles again with a friend of mine. We had a terrific time playing a bit of volleyball on the beach in Santa Monica. It was so relaxing that I wanted to just lay down and spend the night on the beach.

We walked around a bit in San Diego at night. It’s an extremely CLEAN town. TOO clean. But it was a fun time.

Went on a weekend trip to Los Angeles to hang out with some friends and see the sights. Ever since I’ve moved here to the west I’ve wanted to hop over to LA and take a look around.

We got to see an absolutely awesome Takashi Murakami exhibition at the MOCA. Unfortunately, the exhbition is over now, but you can see the pieces over at the MOCA website.

Stood out and snapped a picture in front of the famous Pink’s, but didn’t get anything. The line was too @^#$ing long. We had driven by earlier and saw that there was no line, but we were on our way somewhere. If you drive by Pink’s and there’s no line … you stop and get a hot dog. I don’t care if you’re not hungry.

We walked around beautiful Venice Beach. It was wonderful to smell the sea and walk on the gorgeous beach.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sun set over the ocean in real life before. If I have, I’ve forgotten how beautiful it is. Everyone on the beach stops to watch. As the sun sets turning the sky into oranges and reds, the colors reflect on the wet sand. It reminds me of an modern abstract painting.

Guns For a Face

19Feb08

Gunface

Next to my keyboard and mouse at work I have a notepad. I jot down bits of information I use on it so that I don’t have to strain my fragile brain trying to remember hundreds of incidental measurements (that sometimes go to the fourth decimal place) that occur all through out the day in the course of my labor. But when I’m not scribbling down numbers like 8.127 or 48.25 or .06253 and while I’m waiting for a particularly hugenormous file to save, I sometimes doodle.

It’s a source of bemusement to me that it is only when I am supposed to be doing something else (i.e. working) that I enjoy myself the most drawing. My brain sighs with pleasure and relief when my pen meets the paper and I’m constructing shapes and objects with lines. “I want to draw a giant robotic gorilla with guns for a face,” I think to myself and with no effort at all I draw. There’s a wonderful carelessness that comes with doodling. It doesn’t matter so much what the doodle looks like, just letting my brain go and explore ideas by drawing is what feels good.

What?!!

Uh, what are you doing here? I’m not ready yet. Come back in a few days … Still here? Oh, okay. Here. I’ll be continuing Action Figures here. So here are all of the episodes up until now with a new one.
